People often call it “the natural aquarium of the world” and honestly, once you’re there, it’s easy to see why. The whole coastline is alive with marine wildlife, and the grey whales are the stars of the show.
The Baja California Peninsula is separated from mainland Mexico by the sea of Cortez. From late January through April, thousands of grey whales make the long journey from the Arctic to the warm Pacific lagoons of Baja, on the western side of the Peninsula. What is so striking about the grey whales is their curious nature. They’ll often swim right up to your boat, lifting their barnacle‑marked faces, as if inviting you to reach out and say hello. San Ignacio Lagoon is the most famous spot for these friendly encounters, followed by Ojo de Liebre Lagoon and Magdalena Bay.

On the eastern side of the peninsula, you have the Sea of Cortez, where endless white beaches meet crystal-clear turquoise seas. Most people base themselves in La Paz, enjoying the relaxed, Mexican vibes and a great range of marine-life experiences. You can take a boat out to Isla Espíritu Santo to explore the sandy coves and snorkel amongst sea lions. If you’re here between October and April, you can swim with the whale sharks. It’s one of those experiences that really stays with you.

Further up the eastern coast, you’ll come to slower-paced Loreto. Looming high above the city are the mountains of the Sierra de la Giganta, which contrast beautifully with the white-sands and turquoise waters of Loreto Bay. You can explore the islets that surround the bay and snorkel amongst tropical fish. Or go in search of the blue, humpback, fin and sperm whales that frequent these seas. If you’re lucky, you might even see an orca!
Inland, the landscape is a mixture of high mountain ranges, ancient rock‑painted canyons, and deserts filled with giant cardón cacti. The peaceful town of Todos Santos remains largely off the tourist trail. It’s a hip little place, with a thriving art scene and a fantastic market, where you can buy anything from woven rugs and straw hats to jewellery and hand‑painted ceramics.

Blend all of these experiences into a tailor‑made holiday, or join our exclusive whale‑watching group in February.

The weather is great all year round and it can get particularly hot in the summer months with occasional tropical rains and storms in August and September. Winds are generally stronger and bring cooler air during the winter months – perhaps the best time to visit Baja California. Spring brings warmer temperatures with the least amount of rain. January to March is the best season to see migrating whales give birth in the lagoons.
