Highlights
- Visit tropical white sandy beaches, Cahuita National Park, Talamanca Indian Reserve or the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge.
- Lively evenings in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.
Laidback Limon coast, distinctly relaxed and Carribean in feel.
Located in Limon province on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a beach lover’s paradise. More Caribbean than Costa Rican, formerly a quiet fishing village, life in Puerto Viejo is a lot slower and more laidback than in the rest of the country. Here nowadays you’ll find a vibrant and lively seaside town with amazing beaches, crystal clear blue waters, and some of the best surfing opportunities in Costa Rica. Also available in Puerto Viejo are horse riding tours, snorkelling, diving, mountain biking and kayaking. Puerto Viejo has its own unique blend of Latino, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri indigenous cultures. Evenings are lively and during the day you can visit its tropical golden sandy beaches, Cahuita National Park, Talamanca Indian Reserve or the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge.
Climate: The driest months are January to April and September-October. Tropical storms may hit the coast from June to September. Temperatures are steadily around 25°C year-round.
Further inland, the Pacuare River is a jewel in Limon’s crown. The Pacuare river is amongst the best in the world for white water rafting. Rafting trips are suitable for anyone fit and able and it’s even possible to take a two-day trip with a stay in a luxury lodge within the river canyon.
The rainforests that surround the river are home to exotic animal species such as jaguars, monkeys, ocelots, and a very large number of birds.
Climate: Pacuare is warm year-round and you can expect temperatures from 22°C to 30°C. The drier season is December to April.
