White Water Rafting in Costa Rica
There are plenty of white water rafting experiences in Costa Rica and many are suitable for young and old, and all levels of experience. You can meander through rainforests on gentle rivers or bounce down graded white-water rapids. Because each rafting experience uses a graded section of a river, so you are often offeed easy options and hard options on different sections of the same river. The best time to go rafting is just after the rainy season, from May through to March, though some rivers can be paddled all year round.
There is a widely used international system for grading rivers, classing them from Grade I (small waves and few obstacles) to Grade VI (extreme white-water for experienced paddlers only). Companies offering rafting experiences for visitors will generally take you on Grade I to Grade IV rivers. As a very rough guide, Grade I is a fun and relaxed paddle through small waves, Grade II to III will be big and bounce and a bit of a work-out, Grade III to IV will be high-octane and exhausting and you may be required to have some previous experience.
With that in mind, we will suggest some key sites you can visit if you want to enjoy a rafting experience in Costa Rica.
Best for families and first-timers: bouncy and fun

If you are looking for a family experience, or a first-time rafting experience, then chose a section of river that’s Grade II or III. This will mean bouncy and fun, rather than a high-adrenalin torrent and big, scary drops! It will still be fairly physical though because you’ll be pulling hard on that paddle, and there is still a chance that you might end up in the water. Sarapiquí is probably the most popular river for those looking to enjoy white water rafting, located in the Arenal area. There are a few great sections on the Reventazón River, which is ideal if you’re staying in San José, Puerto Viejo, or Puerto Limón. If you’re staying in Manuel Antonio then you can go white water rafting on the Savegre River.
Best for a white-water thrill

If you love a high-octane adventure and you’re ready for something a little more physical, then there is plenty of big white-water in Costa Rica. You’ll be looking for Grade III to IV rapids, which means you’ll be expected to listen to your raft guide, paddle hard when asked, and prepare yourself for high water volume and a possible dunking! You may be asked if you have any water sports experience, or a good level of fitness and general water confidence. The Pascua section of Revetazó is really wild and is full enough to paddle year round. Naranjo near Quepos is also a wild ride but is only possible during the rainy season, from September to November. The Pacuare River runs through a scenic gorge with vertical walls, big boulders, and fun drops and can be enjoyed if you’re staying in the Limón province.
Scenic rafting on gentle rivers

Grade I rivers can be fast moving but generally have few obstacles and small waves, so these are perfect for those who want a fun meander down river whilst enjoying the scenery and perhaps looking for wildlife living along the river bank. There will be lots of options to explore these rivers by boat, whether that’s in a raft, sit-on-top kayaks, or inflatable kayaks. Peñas Blancas in Arenal is a popular choice, as is the chilamate section of Sarapiquí. Or head to the coastal area of Guanacaste and float down the Corobici river.
